Kalaznó First Settlers

A massive immigration of German peasant farmers did take place after the Turks have been expelled from Hungary in the wars of 1683-1699 and 1716-1718. Most of settlers headed by invitation of the Emperor Charles IV for Banat, but some of them decided to shorten their travel and settled on the manorial estates of the Tolna County.

Kalazno was one of the first all manorial estates to be opened for settlement. As next-door Varsad had already a Lutheran community, most of the newcomers were Lutheran also, as the non Roman Catholics were not desired in the Banat. Just when exactly the first settlers arrived is difficult to establish. In the archives of Tolna there is a Conscription list for Kalazno, which covers the names of the settlers starting with the year of 1722. Some of them moved on a year or two later, some died and others stayed.
